Fun With Percussion!
Maracas are an instrument within the percussion family with original roots in Southern Africa, the Caribbean and South America, but are now widely used in many parts of the world, especially in Latin music.
The children discovered history behind the instrument, and found that there are many different kinds, shapes and sizes of maracas and shakers. We identified the various types of life-sized fruits and vegetables when each shaker was held up, and each child was able to examine their different colors, sizes and textures. We then practiced a few different 4/4 beats in preparation to honor our mothers with a rhythmic Mother's Day Song that we sang in unison while using our maracas and shakers. Finally, we learned how to sing a fun song for Mother's Day in American Sign Language!
