TOO MUCH NOISE! Book and Instrument Music Class!
The children had a blast today in music class exploring different instruments: the guiro, the xylophone, drums, triangles, woodblocks, basket maracas and more! The activity, set to this children's book by Ann McGovern, encouraged the children to play instruments while following directions.
It was a listening activity: as I told the story, I assigned a new set of instruments to each part. The children listened and waited for their parts (which came repeatedly) until the end of the story, when things finally become "quiet". =)
Infants and toddlers also had fun with bouncing songs, fingerplays about bees, and little shoe cobblers! Why do we bounce, tap, and clap in infant class? Yes, many of the little movement songs and rhymes have a similar theme. When we are moving to the music, we are teaching young children how to move their bodies to a beat--spatial awareness. This important skill helps them to not only become aware of how their body moves within certain spaces, but also hones large and fine motor skills. When we hold, rock, cuddle, sing and giggle during music time, we are also creating special emotional and cognitive connections with our children. It's a wonderful thing all around!
The toddler made "Peter's" (main character of Too Much Noise) mad face about the increasingly loud volume happening in his home.
