ANDONG MASK FESTIVAL!



Do you know where South Korea is? If not, let our geography helper show you on the map!


Today we learned about the Andong Mask Festival  
in South Korea! The children enjoyed dancing, using masks, pretending to have a fireworks show and observing traditional dance videos!
















Our main discovery points today:
  • Andong Mask Festival is celebrated in South Korea every year (around this time!)
  • Masks were used to bring good luck for harvests, scare away bad spirits, and in many ceremonies.
  • The festival is usually accompanied with an awesome fireworks show!

Piano Vs. Forte

Today in music class, we discussed the difference between the dynamics of piano and forte!

Piano, or playing soft, is symbolized by a lowercase “p” in music. Forte, or a full volume, is symbolized by a lowercase “f”. Today in music class, we focused on the actual volume of the dynamic versus its symbol, using pictures of items that are considered loud and quiet, and also singing songs and performing motions with our rainbow streamers to loud and soft sounds on the drum and ukulele!

The kids did a great job of illustrating how to use their voice with both dynamic markings, and we had fun brainstorming things that were naturally “piano” and “forte”.

Please feel free to download the picture worksheet below to quiz your child on which items could be considered which dynamic marking, and encourage them to continue thinking about things that could be categorized as such. Try encouraging your child to speak in a “piano” voice the next time that they need a reminder to control volume!

Our younger students 2 and under also enjoyed "singing" a book today: "I'm a Little Teapot", written and illustrated by Iza Trapani.

Week of May 21st




Happy Tuesday!

It was a mathematical day in music class today as we sang counting favorites such as "Five Little Ducks", "Hickory Dickory Dock", and "Five Green and Speckled Frogs". For children toddler and under, we used felt board pieces and puppets for counting songs.

Children two years of age and up are coming home today with a Five Green and Speckled Frog baggie kit for singing! It contains what you see above. Please ask your child to demonstrate how to sing the song for you and use the cheerio pieces to illustrate addition and subtraction, the way we did in music class today!


We also enjoyed using the rainbow streamers today to exercise our large muscles a bit with the windmill song! I had children perform the rotational movements of circle, up and down with their rainbow streamer using both their dominant and non-dominant arm/hand.


This is the way that the windmill goes round (moving arm in circle)
