Ivory Coast and National Peace Day!
What makes you think of peace?
I asked this question of students this week as we learned about Africa's Ivory Coast or Cote D'Ivoire, a coastal region of Africa that produces most of the world's chocolate--specifically, the cocoa bean! (Unfortunately, this region is not know for ethical labor or treatment of workers. A little reading on the internet turns up quite a few sources to read on that topic.)
However, today, our focus was not only on the features of this rich West African country but also on their celebration of National Peace Day, which occurred this year on November 15th, 2016.
This week, we discussed what it means to be peaceful to eachother. How do people talk peacefully with eachother? How do we respect other's bodies peacefully?
We sang the song "Peace in My Fingers" and shook hands with our classmates to practice a peaceful gesture, and I also shook hands with each and every student to greet them.
We also enjoyed Miss Holly joining us for music class as we read the classic "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?" Eric Carle book to the tune of "Baa Baa Black Sheep."
