Miss Holly assisted with music class today! =)

The Great Lakes and Gibson Guitars!

It's hard to believe that this marks the end of September and our study on our beautiful home state, Michigan!

This week, we learned all about the original Gibson/Heritage guitar factory in Kalamazoo, and how guitars are made! The factory, which began in 1902 and was later moved to its modern location in Nashville, was known in its time for turning out the "holy grail" of guitars--the Les Paul.

We looked at some Gibson Les Pauls, SGs and other types of guitars today, and also learned the difference between electrics and acoustics (one of the biggest differences being the sound hole that is present on an acoustic, allowing the vibrations of the strings to be amplified and reverberated.)

The children also enjoyed helping to sort acoustic and electric guitars using a magnet board, based on the visual presentation of the guitars and whether or not they matched acoustic/electric features.

We also sang some fun songs about water and learned about the "Great Lakes!" We discovered that Lake Ontario doesn't actually border Michigan, and that Superior is not only the largest great lake, but also the coldest AND the cleanest! Check out the fun Youtube video below to hear the song we sang about the "Five Great Lakes!"

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR CHILD TODAY

2) Which lake is the coldest? Lake Superior! Bonus: which is the cleanest and biggest as well? That's right, Superior!
3) What does an acoustic guitar have that helps it to make noise? A sound hole
