MACKINAC ISLAND!!!

This week in another installment of our Michigan unit, we learned all about Mackinac Island! We looked at pictures and sang songs about this fun Michigan vacation destination and also about horses in general! Some of the important things the children learned were:

  • Islands are surrounded by water
  • You can't drive cars on Mackinac Island
  • People get there by boat
  • On the island, people travel by walking, bicycling or riding horses
One of the fun songs we sang about Mackinac Island reinforced these ideas:

Did you know? Did you know?
We have islands in Michigan!
Did you know? Did you know?
We have islands in Michigan!

Mackinac Island in Huron Lake--
People don't drive there for goodness sake!
Instead they drive horses through the street
And walk to fudge shops for a treat!

We also sang a song about ten little horses and made galloping sounds with a sanding block--our instrument for the week. Make sure to check out the extender questions below and ask your child all about it! =)

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR CHILD:

1) Does Michigan have islands?
2) What is an island surrounded by?
3) How do people get around on Mackinac Island?
