Tambourines and Quarter Notes!

This week in music class, we learned all about quarter notes and their rhythm values. Quarter notes recieve one beat each. In a 4/4 time signature, there can be four quarter notes in one measure. When counting this rhythm, we might say "one-two-three-four" repeatedly, or "tah-tah-tah-tah!"

We took a look at the quarter note symbol, and also practiced finding them on a coloring sheet. We also "tapped" them on our tambourines. Along with quarter notes, we learned the different sounds a tambourine can make (tapping/shaking) and practiced starting and stopping rhythm sounds together. Check out the pictures and video below!

Tappin' Tambourines!

We had a lot of fun playing quarter note rhythms in music class this week! Using our multi-colored tambourines, we explored the instrument by checking out the sounds it makes when being tapped, rattled and shaken!

We practiced playing single quarter notes (tah-tah-tah-tah) and also single beat or quarter rests! The children loved being challenged by the changing rhythms that I played on a dry erase board for them. They did an AWESOME job with this!

Our older school age students used the tambourines to continue practicing quarter note and eighth note rhythms (a continuation of last week's "chicken nuggets and french fries" lesson).

Also see the video below for the fun little butterfly tune I've been singing in my two's and under classes for the last few weeks. It is quickly becoming a favorite and it's a great song for calming, as well as learning objects, body parts or colors! As always, your extender questions are at the bottom of this post. QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR CHILD:

1) What were some of the colors of the tambourines from music class? Pink, purple, blue, green

2) What do you do when there is a "rest" in the rhythm you are playing on tambourine? You are silent!

3) Did you count the small cymbals on your tambourine? How many were there? Most of our tambourines had 5 sets of 2, for 10 cymbals total!

Week of February 3rd, 2014

TAMBOURINES!!!

We worked our rhythm knowledge and skills today as we practiced playing on the beat (quarter notes or "tahs" and rests, as well!) and using different techniques with the tambourines: tapping, shaking, and even playing just the cymbals. The kids did a great job using the instrument and also very much enjoyed a little nursery rhyme/action song, "Acka Backa"! Click on the video below to watch the infant room participating with me. I tailored the song for each age group (depending on how large they were!) so some children were held up, others jumped up, and some sat at the tables while I held their arms up. At the end of the tune, I hugged each child and said, "Acka Backa Soda Cracker, I love you."

It was amazing to see how much the kids really cherished the small moment of individual connection and though we as caregivers and parents strive to communicate our love and concern for the children on a daily basis, it only takes about twenty seconds to engage in a way that makes both parties feel great and builds a lasting connection.
