CRAZY GUITARS (or is it GUITAR CRAZY?)
I think it's a little of both. ;) We had a blast this week in music class looking at different types of guitars! The main distinctions that we made were between electrics and acoustics. The children learned about the parts of both guitars that are similar (the body, neck, strings, tuning pegs, bridge, nut, etc) but they also learned about what makes them different. Acoustic guitars have an acoustic, or sound hole. Most of them do not have a jack for amplification, and the body is created with the goal in mind of sound being moved around inside! Electrics, on the other hand, use "pickups" with magnets inside to magnetize and amplify the vibrations, which are sent to an amplifier that uses electricity to create stronger sound waves.
I also showed the children my strap, pick and other accessories (including a tuner I use), and they very much enjoyed trying their hand at the electric guitar and different effects that the amplifier created (from overdrive, or distortion, to reverb and delay.)
Finally, we used some fun magnet boards I made to sort and properly place pictures of electric guitars and acoustic guitars.
