Learning About Ghana!
This week in music class, we experienced one of Africa's most peaceful countries--once known as the "Gold Coast" for its gold production--Ghana! In fact, it was named Africa's most peaceful using the global peace index, and so we sang "Peace in My Fingers" and practiced shaking our neighbor's hands, and talked about what peace means.
We looked at pictures of Ghana's flag and tried to name the colors and shapes that we saw. Check the questions below for a review of this with your child! ;) We also looked at people in indigenous dress, as well as bars and nuggets of Ghana's gold. The kids were also fascinated to see money from Ghana, and how much more colorful it is than American dollars. We also learned that Ghana, like the Ivory Coast, is a large producer of cocoa.
Once again, we practiced singing songs and rhythms with our conga drum, reviewed our "Africa" body poem, and enjoyed singing "There was a little Grasshopper" with the drum, which has by far become our new favorite for class! Next week will wrap up our last segment of learning about Africa and we will listen to African juju music by King Sunny Ade. It will be a great time for some review. I do believe our students have learned so much about this amazing continent this month! =)
