SLIDE WHISTLE FUN!
Back by popular demand, it's our SLIDE WHISTLES!
Today was a special day because it marked the first time that our infant class (who are moving up to being toddlers this week) used a slide whistle! They were absolutely delighted with exploring the whistling and sliding sounds. (In case you are wondering, our slide whistles are carefully sanitized and cleaned thoroughly in between classes!).
Beyond just exploring the instrument and having fun, we also discussed pitch today! (FYI, threes and fours had a special pirate event to attend for Grand Haven Pirate Week at the library, so they did not attend music today). The kids practiced mimicking some of the crazy sounds the slide whistle can make with their voices, and school agers also graphed items that make low and high pitches.
Some of the ideas they had for high pitched items were:
birds, owls, teapots, snakes and whistles!
Some of the ideas they had for low pitched items included:
whales, elephants, and a big drum.
In between (could be both) pitches were:
televisions, humans and recorded music.
We also had a fun time "taking our slidewhistles to the playground". Together, we worked to:
--Make our slidewhistles go "up the steps" (one defined pitch at a time, ascending in steps) and
--Down the slide (in a large, sweeping downward slide) and
--Back and forth on the swings (sliding the pitch of slide whistle back and forth in a seesawing motion).
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR INFANT, TODDLER (that just moved to the two's room!), OR SCHOOL AGER TODAY:
1) What color was your slide whistle?
2) How do you make sound with the slide whistle?
3) What did it sound like when you "took your slide whistle to the pretend playground"? What did the slide whistle sound like on the swings?
(See blog above for info on the slide whistle playground!)
